The Avonworth Varsity Volleyball team found their rhythm again in a dominant win at Brentwood. Varsity claimed victory in 3 straight sets, 25-14, 25-16, 25-12.
Junior Setter Abbi Holjes led the way for the Varsity Lady Lopes with a 6-0 run to start the match, and they never looked back. Holjes ended the match with a team high of 7 aces on 22 attempts, with Sophomore Defensive Specialist Sam Blose following with 3.
Avonworth’s aggressive serves kept Brentwood out-of-system most of the night, giving the Lady Lopes numerous chances to convert Brentwood free balls to kills. Leading the charge was Sophomore Middle Hitter Sophie Culley with 10 kills off of 13 attempts. Senior Erin Farrah was able to complement Cully in the Middle with 7 kills of her own in addition to 2 blocks. Finally, Senior Right Side Sasha Kosko, Junior Outside Hitter Maggie Colenbrander, and Junior Outside Hitter Maggie Goetz contributed 5 kills each. Holjes continued to lead this offense with 30 assists, while Senior Libero Sarah Neal had 9 digs in the back row.
The dominant Avonworth serving and offense allowed Coach John Skarupa to give playing time to each Varsity sub and all JV players invited to dress Varsity that night. This is promising for a young program for years to come. The Varsity Lady Lopes round out the end of their regular season next week at home for Senior Night versus Quaker Valley and away at conference rival North Catholic.
