The Number 6 seed Avonworth Varsity Volleyball team won at home in the First Round of the WPIAL Class 2A Volleyball Championship against visiting Laurel High School. The Lady Lopes won in 3 straight sets, 25-17, 25-18, 25-22.
The Lady Lopes played a very well rounded game in the first two sets. The back row was able to control the deep, aggressive Laurel serves allowing Junior Setter Abbi Holjes to connect with her hitters in order to generate kills. The “in system” passing allowed Holjes to showcase the Middle and Right Side Avonworth hitters.
Right Side Senior Sasha Kosko led the team with 7 kills, while Middle Hitters Senior Erin Farrah and Sophomore Sophie Culley followed with 5 and 4 kills respectively. Sophomore Defense Specialist Sam Blose was the consistent force in the Lady Lopes back row leading the team with 6 digs and an incredible 2.56 serve receive rating. Senior Senior Defensive Specialist Alexia Heinold followed with a 1.71 serve receive rating, and Senior Libero Sarah Neal registered 5 digs.
Nevertheless, Laurel did not let the Lady Lopes cruise to victory in the third set. The Spartans were able to control their pass game to engage their top hitters beginning to generate kills. This new offense initially put Avonworth on their heels, but experience of the Lady Lopes starters enabled them to rise up to the challenge and win the battle. Holjes was key in driving this team in setting 19 assists on the night.
Avonworth Varsity Volleyball team continues their playoff run in the WPIAL Class 2A Volleyball Championship at Number 3 South Park on Monday.
