The Avonworth Lady Lopes volleyball team is on a roll winning their 4th straight match Tuesday evening against the Chartiers-Houston Buccaneers. What makes things even better is that three of these victories were in conference matches giving the Lopes a 6-4 record and a very strong chance of making the playoffs. The Lady Lopes defeated the Lady Bucs in straight sets 3-0.
Set 1 started with the Bucs taking a quick 4-1 lead but the Lopes just as quickly tied it at 4-4 when the Char-Houston coach called timeout. The timeout apparently was ineffective as the Lady Lopes went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-4 lead. After a few side out exchanges, Marian Haney served Avonworth on a 6-0 run and Sarah McAdams followed by serving on a 7-0 run making the score 24-9. The Bucs managed to get 2 more points while facing set point, with the Lopes finally winning Set 1, 25-11.
The beginning of Set 2 was similar to Set 1 with the Lopes this time jumping out to a 3-1 lead with the Bucs tying it at 4-4 and again at 5-5. Carly Tomko took the reins serving on a 4-0 run. With the score 12-10 in favor of the Lopes, it was Grace O’Brien’s turn to serve the Lopes on a 9-0 run making the score 21-10. Avonworth went on to win Set 2 by a score of 25-12.
Set 3 pretty much followed suit with the Lopes taking a 5-1 lead, then with the score 9-4 Haney again served the Lopes on a 5-0 run to take a 13-5 lead when Char-Houston called a timeout. The Lady Lopes answered with three 3-0 runs making the score 21-7 when Char-Houston called their final timeout. The Bucs were able to win a few more points, down the stretch but their 4 service errors hurt and the Lopes took the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.
Makenna Gavin had a fabulous match leading with 10 Kills on 20 attempts coupled with 5 service aces.
The remainder of the scoring was fairly well balanced as follows:
Kat Goetz – 5 kills on 9 attempts
Marian Haney – 4 kills on 6 attempts
Emily Ferketic – 3 kills on 5 attempts
Grace O’Brien – 3 kills on 4 attempts
Lexie Auth – 3 Kills on 6 attempts
Marian Haney added three service aces, with Abbi Holjes adding 2 aces, and Sarah McAdams and Riley North each with one.
