The Avonworth JV Volleyball team found their rhythm again in a close win at Brentwood. Despite Brentwood’s JV team taking the Lady Lopes to a third, deciding set, Avonworth pulled ahead at the end, claiming victory 21-25, 25-15, 16-14.
Avonworth JV Lady Lopes lost a tight first set, but managed to work together as a team for a dominant second set victory. The Lady Lopes had some incredible saves that could’ve made SportCenter’s Top 10. Freshman Libero Layne Shinsky had a few incredible ups to ensure that Avonworth’s serving runs continued. Shinsky ended the night with not only 9 digs, but 2 kills after playing in the front row for the first time all season.
Led by Shinsky, the JV Avonworth back row had its most well rounded match of the season with a single match high of 50 team digs and a 2.12 team serving rating. In addition to Shinsky, Sophomore Right Side Mary Gannon, Sophomore Defensive Specialist Francie King, Setter Alivia Lantzy, and Outside Hitter Nora Kate Gavin contributed 10, 9, 9, and 7 digs, respectively.
Despite the great back row play, the Lady Lopes found themselves in a close game the entire third set. At a 14-14 score, Brentwood missed a serve, giving Avonworth the advantage. Sophomore Outside Hitter Gemma Kosko had an aggressive serve, forcing an overpass that led to a kill by Gavin to claim the match 16-14. Gavin finished the match with a team high 10 kills, while Gannon contributed 5 and Kosko 2. Lantzy continued to run this 5-1 offense with 19 assists.
The JV Lady Lopes finish their season next week at home Tuesday versus Quaker Valley and away Thursday at conference rival North Catholic.
