Ryan Felter turned in a gutsy performance on the mound and at the plate, as the Avonworth boys varsity baseball team defeated Elwood City 7-5 in eight innings.
The Lopes scored a pair of runs in the first inning without the benefit of a hit, and the Wolverines committed three errors. Avonworth added two more runs in the second on Jack Reed’s double.
Tensions mounted, and tempers flared at the end of the third inning, as three players were ejected after a shoving incident, including two Avonworth players.
The Lopes had a 5-1 lead until a disastrous fifth inning, when Ellwood City tied the game with clutch hitting and 3 Avonworth errors.
The game stayed tied until the top of the eighth. Jake Sommers led off with a base hit to left, and Pat Gannon sacrificed him to second base. With two outs, Ryan Felter launched a towering double to left center, scoring Sommers with what turned out to be the winning run. Jax Miller followed with a booming triple to right field to plate an insurance run.
Felter, who retired the side in the bottom of the eighth inning, threw 5 innings, earning the win.
The Lopes, now 4-0 in section play (5-0 overall) will travel to Washington Friday for a non-section game.
