In a conference game that marks the midpoint of the 2018 volleyball season, Avonworth (3-3) fought a tough battle against North Catholic (6-0) losing three straight sets.
In set one with the score tied 6-6, North Catholic went on an 8-0 run and went on to win the set easily 25-13. Avonworth came back strong in set 2 leading 3-0, however North Catholic went on a long 9-1 run then another 6-0 run to take a 18 – 12 lead. The two teams traded points until Avonworth used its own 3-0 run to come as close as 20-22. North Catholic closed set two with a second victory 25-20. The third set was even more competitive with 4 ties and 4 lead changes. With Avonworth trailing 21-22, North Catholic took command again to win the set 22-25.
For Avonworth, Makenna Gavin lead the scoring with 14 kills on 35 attempts, Emily Ferketic followed with 6 kills on 12 attempts, Kat Goetz 4 kills on 8 attempts and Marian Haney with 4 kills on 15 attempts. Kat Goetz also had 4 block assists and Carly Tomko had a service ace.
For North Catholic, the Felix sisters, Alana and Dominique lead the scoring with 10 kills on 13 attempts and 23 kills on 28 attempts respectively.
Avonworth’s next match is home at 6:00 PM Thursday, September 27 against rival Our Lady of Sacred Heart (OLSH)
