In a steaming hot gym, visiting Avonworth Lady Lopes won their third straight match beating the Class 3A, Quaker Valley Quakers 3-0 in a non-conference match. The unseasonably high temperatures for October – in the mid-80 – turned the QV gym into a sauna, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Lady Lopes from extending their win streak.
The first set was all Avonworth taking leads at 6-2 and 14-3, until QV woke up from the heat coming back as close as 18-9. Abbi Holjes then ran off four straight serves to give the Lopes a 24-11 lead they would not surrender. Avonworth won Set 1, 25-13.
The Quakers came out ready to play in Set 2 tying up the score at 2-2, and 5-5 until Avonworth went on a 6-0 run to take the lead 16-6. Quaker Valley would not get much closer with Avonworth taking the second set 25-16.
Again the Quakers were not ready to concede the match coming out strong in Set 3 to take a 3-2 lead. The teams exchanged points with an Avonworth 13-12 advantage at the set midpoint. At this point Coach Vandervort began substituting reserve and JV players into the match. The younger Lopes played well going on a 5-0 run to take 19-14 lead. But the Quakers were not finished, making a comeback to get as close as 24-21. Avonworth prevailed taking set and the match 25-21.
Makenna Gavin led all scorers with 6 kills on 22 attempts, followed by Emily Ferketic with 5 kills on 10 attempts and Lexi Auth with 5 kills on 9 attempts. Abbi Holjes had 4 service aces. Interestingly, the Lady Lopes had zero blocks and block assists. Avonworth’s next match is Tuesday, October 09, 2018 at Chartiers-Houston in a conference match starting at 7:00 PM
