Game Recap

The Avonworth boys varsity soccer team had, arguably, its worst game of the season in a 4-1 section loss to Riverview.

The offense and defense both struggled, and the Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead, which lasted until halftime. Avonworth suffered an unlucky break when it had a goal removed the scoreboard because of an injury time out that was called prior to the shot.

In the second half, Sam Guzzo put the Lopes on the board (assisted by Jason Novosel), but Riverview struck back with two unanswered goals.

The Lopes (9-4, 11-5) will finish its section schedule Thursday against undefeated North Catholic.

MS GIRLS SOCCER FINISH SEASON STRONG WITH 1-0 WIN OVER SPRINGDALE

The MS Girls Soccer traveled to Springdale for a Columbus Day Special game. The match was played on a soggy field on a gray day.

The Lopes controlled the play for the entire first 1/2 but could not register a goal.

The second 1/2 looked like it was going to be identical to the first with the Lopes controlling play, keeping the ball in Springdale territory, getting corners, but not able to finish. That was until the 48th MIN when Tess Pappas dribbled through 3 Springdale players and ripped a shot from 18yds out. The keeper stopped the shot but could not control the rebound which was poked in by Maggie Colenbrander. That was all the Lopes needed on this day, because their back line of Kate Berardi, Elle Cepeda, Caroline Penrod and Tess Pappas just frustrated Springdale all day long.

The lady’s finished with a 9-2-2 record for the season. Coach Pap said after the game “…I am excited about the future of girls soccer in Avonworth. Last years team was exceptional, this year was even better and I can’t wait for some of the young lady’s in the younger programs to start playing for the school. The future is very bright.”

MS GIRLS SOCCER TAME SEWICKLEY PANTHER 5-0

The MS Lady Lopes soccer faced off against the Sewickley Academy Panthers on Friday afternoon at home.

The first 1/2 was dominated by the Lopes but the net was elusive for the whole 1/2. Sewickley did manage one shot on goal.

The second 1/2 the Lopes switched from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 and they found their stride. AT 35MINS Tess Pappas found Maggie Colenbrander for their first goal and then just 3 mins later Macy Schreifer found Maggie Colenbrander with a threw ball that Maggie tickled the twine with, LOPES 2 – SA 0. At 43 MINS Maura Logan connected with Maggie Colenbrander to make it 3-0. At the 48MIN mark Mia Burens and Macy Schreifer pulled off a pretty 1-2 combination threw the middle of the SA defense with Mia getting the honors. And this was topped off with a Maggie Colenbrander break away goal to finish the days scoring with a LOPES 5-0 win.

The LOPES finish their season this Monday at Springdale. The girls right now have a 8-2-2 record.

Game Recap

The Avonworth boys varsity soccer team fell to Deer Lakes in a non-section battle Saturday afternoon, 1-0

In the first half, Avonworth survived a scare when the Lancers were awarded a penalty kick, but the kick lined directly into the arms of goalkeeper Corey Dick. Later in the half, however, a Deer Lakes forward snuck through the Lopes defense and scored the only goal in the game. Avonworth had a handful of scoring opportunities early, but fell just short.

The Lopes held the Lancers scoreless in the second half, but they couldn’t put the ball in the net. Deer Lakes, a section 2A team, has a 9-2-2 record.

Avonworth (9-3, 11-4), in third place in its section, begins a critical week of games Tuesday afternoon at fourth place Riverview. They will then host undefeated North Catholic Thursday evening at Lenzner Field to close out the section season.
