The Boys and Girls Swim Teams had strong individual and team performances on the second day of the WPIAL Championships reinforcing their position as perennial championship contenders.
The Boy’s team challenged for first place the entire meet against last year’s champion, Indiana High School. In the end the boys fell just short of first place but had several notable performances. Junior Cooper Groll posted the 3rd place finish in the 100 Freestyle with fellow Junior Clark Bernauer taking 18th place. Freshman Matthew Purcell gave a tremendous effort in the 100 Backstroke finishing 2nd by .01 seconds. Junior Graham Herzig placed 9th in the event with Junior Hugo Eadie finishing 14th and Senior Luke Wagner finishing 17th. Freshman Jack Blaser earned a valuable point for the team with his 16th place finish in the 100 Breaststroke and Sophomore Andrew Baldauff posted at 20th place finish in the 500 Freestyle. The 400 Freestyle Relay team of Groll, Purcell, Bernauer and Senior Luke Tomczak captured 2nd place.
The Girl’s team was equally as impressive posting a 7th place finish in a very competitive meet. Sophomore Anna Neiss let the team with a 5th place finish in the 100 Freestyle followed by Junior Danica Raich in 15th and Senior Kaylee Madey in 21st. Freshman Catrina Raich took 2.5 seconds off of her 500 Freestyle time to finish 13th in the event. Junior Carly Spahr led a trio of swimmers in the 100 Backstroke finishing 9th with Seniors Angie Patarini finishing 15th and Hazel Cullen finishing 23rd. Freshman Taryn Navilliat had a great swim in the 100 Breaststroke finishing in 11th place. Danica and Catrina Raich along with Madey and Sophomore Anna Kohler posted also posted an 11th place finish in the 400 Freestyle Relay.
Next up for the swimmers will be the PIAA Championships which will be held at Bucknell University on March 12-13.
