Three Avonworth Wrestlers placed in their respective weight classes in the West Mifflin Christmas Tournament. The West Mifflin tournament has been in existence for over 25 year and this year had 34 teams participating making it one of the largest tournaments in the area.
Avonworth placed 3 wrestlers on the podium, led by Sophomore Jake Barbabella who placed 2nd in the 220 pound weight class, and they posted a team score of 82 which earned them 13th place overall in the team standings, 4th highest of all the AA schools that competed in this tournament. That in of itself is quite an accomplishment since Avonworth only filled 8 weight classes out of a possible 14. The other 2 wrestlers who wrestled well enough to be on the podium were, Freshman Joe Boughton and Sophomore Ryan McHirrella. Boughton was 3rd at 138 pounds, Joe’s only loss in the tournament was to the eventual champion Dan Yetsick from Ambridge. Ryan McHirella at 113 pounds placed 6th in arguably one of the strongest weight classes in the tournament. To get to the medal round Ryan had to wrestle 6 very physical matches over the course of 2 days.
Congratulations to all the wrestlers who battled hard.
Next up is a Section Dual meet at Carlynton High School on January 9th.
