Running on the course where they hope to challenge for a WPIAL Championship next week, the Avonworth Girls Cross Country Team showed they are peaking at the right time. The team won the AA Division at Thursday’s TSTCA Cross Country Championship held at California University of PA. Next week’s WPIAL Championship will be held on the same course.
The Girls team, competing without injured Senior Captain Emily Tyler, used 4 top 20 performances to secure a victory over Elizabeth Forward and New Castle. Leading the way for the Lopes was Junior Anna Igims who finished in 2nd place with a time of 20:45 over the hilly 5K course. A trio Freshman crossed the finish line next with Lindsey Hartle taking 4th, Taea Schriefer in 11th and Maggie Colenbrander in 16th. Juniors Natialie Marshall and Lauren Pflueger came in together at 46 and 47 with Sophomore Brook Johncour finishing 81st.
The Boys team, competing in the A Division, earned 5th Place and were led by Sophomore Jackson Habala who finished 6th overall with a time of 18:34. Junior Luke Wagner was next for the Lopes finishing 21st followed by Senior Jacob Noethiger in 27th and Freshmen David Kujawinski in 28th. Sophomore Eli Kaurer took 34th place followed by Freshman Luke Woodfill in 41st and Sophomore Mike Frank in 46th.
Coach Jason Smith was pleased with the results of both the Girls and Boys team. “We are really happy with the performances of both the Girls and Boys teams today” Smith said. “It was good see this course and we are looking forward to seeing what the teams can do at the WPIAL Championship!”
The WPIAL Cross Country Championships will be held on Thursday afternoon. The top 3 AA Girls teams and top 4 A Boys teams will qualify for the PIAA State Championship. In addition, the top 20 Boys in A and top 15 Girls in AA will qualify for the individual PIAA State Championships.
