Swimmers Defeat Highlands, Freshman Groll Breaks Oldest School Record
On Thursday night, the Boys’s and Girl’s Swim Teams defeated Highlands High School in a section meet to remain undefeated. The scores of the meet were Boys 75-35 and Girls 88-63. The highlight of the meet was Freshman Cooper Groll’s record performance in the 50 Freestyle. Groll posted a time of 22.82 in the event which broke a school record 22.90 that was set in 1990 by Mike Fisher. It is also one of the top times recorded this year by WPIAL AA swimmers.
In addition to winning the 50 Freestyle, Groll was also victorious in the 100 Yard Freestyle and his two relay events swimming the 200 Medley Relay with Senior Nick Madey, Junior Aidan Sommers and Sophomore Luke Tomczak and the 200 Freestyle Relay with Sommers, Tomczak and Senior Zech Boyce. Winning individual events were Boyce in the 100 Backstroke and 200 Freestyle, Madey in the 100 Butterfly and 100 Breastroke, Sommers in the 200 Individual Medley, Junior Mason Herzig in the 500 Freestyle. Madey also won the 400 Freestyle Relay swimming with Herzig, Sophomore Luke Wagner and Freshman Clark Bernauer.
The Girl’s Team was again led by Junior Karen Siddoway who won the 100 and 200 Freestyle, events where she has posted the top WPIAL AA times this season. Other individual event winners for the girls were Senior Ava Groll in the 50 Freestyle, Sophomore Angie Patarini in the 500 Freestyle, and Freshman Carly Spahr in the 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke. The team also won all three of the relay events with Siddoway, Groll, Spahr and Freshman Isabella Salerno winning the 200 Freestyle relay, Groll, Patarini, Spahr and Freshman Danica Raich winning the 200 Medley Relay and Siddoway, Patarini, Salerno and Junior Brianna Nowka winning the 400 Freestyle Relay.
Next Wednesday at 6:00, the teams will take on section rival Springdale at Northgate High School.
