Game Recap

AVONOWRTH GIRLS MS SOCCER TAKE DOWN THE HOPEWELL VIKINGS 2-1

The Avonowrth girls soccer met the Hopewell Vikings on Wednesday at their pitch in the hills of Hopewell. It was a perfect day for soccer, cool and sunny.

The Lopes got off the a quick start, at the 3MIN mark Revenna Kelley took a ball through the Hopewell defense with a very nice physical play and was able to slot the ball across the box to a waiting Mia Burens who buried it home for the 1-0 lead. It only took 7 more MINS for a similar play to develop but this time it was Ava Wert to Mia Burens to give the Lopes a 2-0 lead just 10MINS into the match. Then the Vikings struck, their talented forward Lauryn Speicher sliced into the Lopes defense at the 12MIN mark and found a way to beat the Avonowrth Goal Keeper to bring the game within 1 for the Vikings, 2-1.

The Viking combination of Lauryn Speicher and Marlee Mancini caused the Lopes defense fits for the entire first half, being able to penetrate our defense and rip good shots. The Lopes defense (Elle Cepeda, Amanda Roberts, Sophie Culley and Kate Berardi) were able to keep the viking from getting the perfect shot most of the time, but when the Vikings did Lydia Amayo was equal to the task. It was not that the Lopes did not get their fair share of opportunities, all day Revenna Kelley, Ava Wert and Caroline Penrod were able to put equal pressure on the Viking defense and got some terrific opportunities but none were converted. The Lopes best opportunity cam at the 50MIN mark when they were awarded a PK due to a foul in the box but the shot hit post and ricochet harmlessly off the cross bar.

Coach Pappas said after the match,” this was a good test for the girls, the girls found a way to beat a very good Hopewell club today. Its always fun to go into a good teams home field and beat them. It was an exciting match and I look forward to when they come to our field.”
